My brother Fred won an Emmy this weekend for his work (along with his team) on the Apple + series "The Studio" (Emmy for outstanding sound mixing in a comedy or drama series). Fred literally worked his way up from the very bottom to reach this moment and I couldn't be more proud and happy for him and Cathy!

A few years back we had the opportunity to open a show (with #FelixCavaliere's #Rascals) for #BrianWilson on his 50 years of #PetSounds tour. Not only was it amazing to watch him and his band (which featured #BeachBoys founding member #AlJardine and and former member #BlondieChaplin) recreate the masterpiece of Pet Sounds live but it was such a thrill to meet Brian and get to speak to him, Al and Blondie a bit about the album and tour. Today we lost that true legend, visionary and pioneer of Rock & Roll music. Recently came across this photo as an auction item when we played #AliceCooper 's #Coopstock show earlier this year. It was taken at the 2023 #ChristmasPudding show and in the pic I'm playing bass, along with bass legend #RudySarzo, on the show closer where Alice brought back out his guest artists #SammyHagar, #NancyWilson of #Heart & Rudy (who was there with Quiet Riot). We had just backed up everyone on the show (except for obviously Quiet Riot) when this pic was taken. I look at this and think that my 13 yr old self would think what kind of crazy universe am I living in. And I'm thinking just how grateful I am to have gotten to (and still) live my dreams over and over. Makes me think back to the kid who was starting out by learning to play songs like "Schools Out", Montrose's "Rock Candy" (Sammy was the lead singer) & "Barracuda" - never in my wildest dreams would I have thought that years later I would play those songs with those legendary artists (and add in playing "double bass" with Rudy Sarzo too!) who also happen to be really outstanding, generous people. And the top of that list would be Alice and Sheryl Cooper who give so much and are doing so much good with their #SolidRockTeenCenters (that these shows are benefitting). The Music Biz lost a great one yesterday, #JDSouther was a legendary writer for the Eagles, Linda Ronstadt and even co-wrote "Heart of the Matter" with Don Henley, which I consider an all time great single. He was also well known as an actor and I got to meet him while filming the pilot for "Nashville". June 6 1944... Watching the ceremony from France, I have no idea how 80 years ago today, those brave men from #TheGreatestGeneration managed to run onto this, #OmahaBeach, in #Normandy (& many others), from their landing crafts carrying 100 lbs of gear, while soaking wet and all the time being shot at from the enemy encamped in the very berm at the end of this very wide beach. And then those brave soldiers would have to scale that berm under intense fire if they even made it that far. All I know is that on this 80th anniversary of #DDay, those brave young men made the hard choice to do the right thing and their sacrifice saved the world... and for that they have my eternal respect and eternal gratitude. * * * (Edit: to clarify, I visited in 2011 with my brother @chucktilleydrum when we flew over with my other brother @wadehayesofficial for some shows in Normandy. Tommy DeCarlo took on the role of lead vocalist for Boston in 2008. Founding member Tom Scholz said in an interview with the Sun Herald, "Tommy DeCarlo is absolutely the best live vocalist. So sad to wake up to the news about the passing of #CountryMusic legend #TobyKeith. Over my many years in Nashville a, I would cross paths with TK and his band from his beginnings in the 90's as the opener for the gig I was on and on to superstardom. He was always very cool and gracious and always had a killer band, many of which have been friends of mine for a long time. I finally got the chance to play with him in 2019 when he made a surprise appearance with #Sixwire at #TheWarburton for #StJude and then again last year when we ran into him in the bar at the hotel we were staying at in Kauai. He was there getting away after a year of fighting his cancer battle and he asked, "y'all playing here somewhere? I wanna sing a couple with you!" And so at the show the next night, sure enough Toby got up and sang a couple and sounded great. Was such a cool experience to be a part of seeing him sing again after so long. Toby did a lot to #FightCancer with his #TobyKeithFoundation, for sure #CancerSucks and I am really sad for his family and for my friends Mica, Dink, Dave and Rich who have been a part of his musical family for so long. #RIPTK

Long post alert!!! Last night's show in #Phoenix with #Sixwire for #AliceCooperChristmasPudding was an epic show for many reasons. I mean, we backed up #TommyDeCarlo of #Boston, #NancyWilson of #Heart, #SammyHagar (of solo & #VanHalen fame) and our good friend #AliceCooper. Heck, we even did a Sixwire signature, #TheBeast and got a #StandingO! Plus, a record amount was raised for #SolidRock, which is the reason that really matters. But with the artists, one name that really stood out was Sammy Hagar. Over my career, I've been so fortunate to have played with so many of my musical heroes (looking at you Alice Cooper!) but never the #RedRocker. Here's the story... Going back to the very beginning of playing the bass, there are a number of moments that happen that influence and help shape you into what you become many years down the road. One of those moments for me was a concert in Phoenix at Sun Devil Stadium. We had moved to Tempe for a couple years when I was young and just starting to play The show was for a film remake and they needed a full stadium for the crowd scenes. It was a lineup that featured #PeterFrampton, #Santana & and a band called #Montrose, who just happened to have a young Sammy Hagar as lead ainger. They just blew me away, a super tight band of great musicians led by a guitar hero (#RonnieMontrose) and Sammy, a singer with amazing vocals and guitar work. I bought their first two albums and tried to learn every great riff from songs like #BadMotorScooter #SpaceStationNo5 and #RockCandy. I continued to follow him skyrocketing to solo fame and then on to Van Halen! But the young bass player back then could never dare to imagine that one day in the distant future, he would get to play with that guy. And yesterday that happened, and it was everything young me would have hoped for. Sammy was a complete class act & an absolute #RockStar! And the topper was sound check where we busted into Rock Candy and he just jumped right in on the verse with that classic Sammy Hagar scream. He even said "awesome, we can play that that one tonight if y'all want" (we didn't have time)... Surreal and amazing, I'm truly a lucky guy...

First was a tribute to #Elvis featuring these greats doing some of their own hits and some of their Elvis favs. #DarleneLove - An absolute legend and RnR Hall of Famer, I was super excited to play with her. She's a #Christmas song icon, she sang on the #68ComebackSecial and won an #Oscar for the film #20FeetFromStardom ! #DennisQuaid - our 2nd time playing with him, what a talented cool guy and movie icon! #PamTillis - Country royalty and a long time friend of ours, she killed it! #JayOsmond - obviously from an iconic music family, Jay was the drummer in #theOsmonds and was greatly influenced by legendary #TCB drummer #RonnieTutt. Jay crushed a drum solo as a salute to Ron! - Last night we recreated the amazing live experience of the #ElvisAlohaFromHawaii concert that was beamed via satellite across the world in 1973! This popped up in photo memories today.... Exactly 12 years ago, I got to play at a major #BucketList venue in #London - the #RoyalAlbertHall! It was a #soldout show with #RichardMarx and I got to do it with some of my #Sixwire brothers who I've been playing with for 30 some years now! We also had a ball playing tourist for a couple days (including the obligatory crossing of #AbbeyRoad). I even got to pick up a 1950's #PBass that #Sting played for many years and then donated to the #HardRockCafe! On this Memorial Day 2023, I am so grateful to be those who gave their all... A few years back, I was able to pay my respects at the American Cemetery in Normandy France. One of the most reverent and honorable places I have ever been to. It really drives it home what those young soldiers must have faced on June 6 1944 when you stand on Omaha Beach and see just how far it is that they had to run while sopping wet, and carrying heavy gear, from the water to the berm - that they then had to climb, all the while fighting against a dug in and heavily armed force. And when one fell, the next one took over. And somehow they did it, and in the process, they saved the world. The ones who didn't make it are still there at the cemetery. And again, I am grateful to them and all their brothers and sisters we have lost over the years to protect our freedoms, all I have are these words... thank you for your sacrifice. * (Cool note on the last pic: I even share a name with one of the D-Day heroes, British Major John Howard who was tasked to lead a force to parachute in and capture the vital Pegasus Bridge in the pre dawn hours before the invasion started)

Those of you who follow my feed know that we (Sixwire) played an extremely cool show this past weekend backing up Rock/Soul legends Alice Cooper, Robin Zander of Cheap Trick, Tommy Thayer of Kiss, Sister Sledge, Ed Roland of Collective Soul and Dave Jenkins of Pablo Cruise. Wishing a very big happy birthday to my @Sixwire brother @stevemandile ! Steve has played a huge role in my life starting from the 80's, when we met due a little studio in Abilene TX, Castle Sound, run by a musical guru named Michael Henry Martin (reunited in pic 8) Hen told us we needed to know each other and because of that meeting... well... Simply put, I am not doing what I do today. Steve brought me to Nashville back in '89 and since then, we have spent the last 30+ years making music, living dreams, and even some softball together. It's a sad day in the Nashville Bass community as we have lost one of the giants of our craft, the great #MichaelRhodes. He was a beast on the bass and a true good guy in person. My experience with Michael goes all the way back to when I first moved to Nashville from Austin back in '89. After I had been here a little while, I was talking to a friend back in Austin (Bruce Spelman), from the band (Extreme Heat) I had been in before I moved to Music City. Bruce said I should look up his friend Michael Rhodes, they had been in a band together years earlier and that the remnants of that band eventually became the one we had been in. Pretty cool I thought, session monster Michael and I shared some Austin musical DNA. Not long afterward, I spied Michael in the bass section at Corner Music. I walked up to him while looking at some basses and introduced myself right out of the blue. I told him about our "connection" and he lit up and talked with me for about an hour in the bass section of the music store. I asked him every question under the sun about what it means/takes to be a successful bass player here, ie how he became such a big fish in the biggest of ponds. The insight he shared contained many of the things that I tried to build my foundation on as a young, eager and hungry bass player, and still do to this day. Although we didn't cross paths much after that day, I was always grateful that he took some time to mentor a young player and I was glad that I got to tell him "thanks" in person at the 2019 Musicians Hall of Fame Induction ceremony where he was honored along with the rest of the Nashville session A-Team known as "The Players" (I was there performing with the great #FelixCavaliere of #TheRascals, who was also being inducted, there in part due to following his words of wisdom). Last night was an amazing #Elvis show at #Graceland, and today on the King's BDay I'm thinking about how I was channelling my inner #JerryScheff as I strove to recreate his incredible #bass lines. That brings me back to #ElvisWeek in August 2022. It was a big one for me as I got to finally meet & share the stage with one of my #bassheroes, that same Jerry Scheff. Jerry, along with drummer #RonnieTutt made up the #TCBband's rhythm section and they were absolutely a dynamo together, they just tore up everything they did. When I was a kid who was just starting out on bass, I was way into the harder rock bands of the time or fusion jazz. A friend of mine had been telling me what a great live band Elvis had. And I would say "I'm sure they are" but my skepticism probably showed (what did I know, lol). So one day at his house I said ok, let's hear this band, assuming they couldn't possibly be as good as he said. So he spun the "Aloha from Hawai" album from his dad's collection. It starts out with Ronnie Tutts thundering drums on "See See Rider" weaving through 22 songs, all with those brilliant bass lines by Jerry, interlocking with Ronnie's equally great drumming. Suffice to say I was blown away & I became a fan. And that brings me back to last August where I played most of that same Elvis show with Jerry Scheff watching from the wings as he waited to be brought out as the special guest, along with his 3 son's, my friends Jason, Darin and Lauren, all great musicians too. You know Jason as the lead singer/bassist for #Chicago for over 30 years. No pressure at all! And I did my best to honor his legacy and play what Jerry had created. After the show, Jason brought me to meet with Jerry. He was very complementary as I told him my only thought was to honor his legacy. He told me that he had indeed felt that and that there were moments where "it was like listening to myself back in time". I've heard it said that it's never good to meet your heroes because they seldom live up to your image. But then you would miss those times where they are completely beyond everything you could have hoped for. Suffice to say this was one of those times, thanks for everything JS!

I'm sitting here in Hawaii, on top of Mauna Kea watching the sunset on the day before NYE, and really, it is setting on all of 2022. And besides being in awe of the wonder and beauty, I'm really feeling grateful. I am so fortunate to be able to do what I do, when so many others don't get to live their dreams. And getting to do it with my #Sixwire brothers is such a blessing. Plus many other people, notably my #FelixCavaliere's #Rascals gang, all who I consider musical family. Artists I/we backed up in 2022 ranged all the way from #AliceCooper to #ZZTop's #BillyGibbons, from #RobZombie and #RobHalford of Judas Priest to #RandyOwen of #Alabama - and about 100 others as well. And all were great and memorable to perform with. And as I look forward to what surprises 2023 brings, I think back on what an amazing year 2022 turned out to be and again, what I feel most is gratitude...
